THE WUNDERBAR WELCOMES HOME THE EASTERN

by The Eastern -       Oct 30, 2014

I wake up...the bed is the same as it was the night before, the carpet keeps its colour, the view outside the window says it hasn't changed since yesterday, it was autumn and now it is spring and we are home...
we went to europe, we played all over, we took our new zealand songs across the sea, strangers with distant tongues sang them back to us, people hugged us like we were friends, they opened doors, they paid for the drinks, they reached into their pockets and traded an hours labour for our records, they became friends, they lifted their glasses, the played us their songs, they gifted us their evenings, they held our hands and walked us through it all, we told them we'd be back and of course we will, thats what we do we come back, eventually these songs, this music, this journey, this long and winding gift we call the road will spin us round and spit us out right where we left, we will look older, we will still be tired but we promise not to flinch we promise to be grateful and we promise to sing and play and sing and play and sing and play and be grateful again...so thankyou new friends thankyou for showing up and taking care with us...thankyou for being old and vast and wise and treating us like family...like I said we'll be back just like we're back home right now...two months later with our dreams intact...
I'm sorry we didnt take many photos, we didnt write enough, sometimes when you dont send many signals home you wonder if home exists without you, of course it does it always exists in spite of you, but sometimes you wonder...do those buildings remember our faces? do our brothers and sisters remember our hearts?...we should have written, we know we should've...but in our defence and hopefully n our favour just let it be said its good to wander in the wilderness a little, its good to be adrift, too many dispatches and you may as well've stayed at home...we wanted to gather some new stories some strange sights get untethered and get a little world on our clothes...we did and it was grand...thanks for holding the fort...
but we came home and hear we are, maybe we'll take a couple of weeks to get the bags repacked but we've got a lot to do this coming year...we're gonna tell you some more about that in the next wee while...
right now we're gonna suck up this aforementioned continuity of days...we're gonna wake up in the same place, we're gonna make phone calls and catch up slowly and we want to play some music...we got a welcome home call from the mighty wunderbar and they said they were saving saturday night for us, saving it to welcome us home, saving it so we could remember where we're at...so we took it and we're gonna play there, then, this saturday night...this one, coming up in just a few days and we're gonna do it at 9pm and we're gonna play and we're gonna sing and we're gonna carve our boots into the stage again to make us feel like we have landed and we are really home (at least for a little while)...
so we'd like to welcome you to join us...
consider this your invitation,
